What Connection Errors Usually Mean

Connection messages can help identify which part of the setup has failed.

SSL handshake failed or wrong version number

Usually indicates that:

• SSL/TLS is not enabled.
• Plain 5000 was used instead of +5000.
• The client is attempting a non-encrypted connection.

Invalid password or authentication failed

Check:

• Your current password.
• Username capitalisation.
• The network name.
• The username/Network:password format.

No such network

The network label in the connection command does not match a network stored on your account.

Copy the exact name from the dashboard.

Connection refused

May indicate:

• An incorrect server or port.
• A temporary server outage.
• The remote IRC server is not listening on that port.
• The selected address family is unavailable.

Connection timed out

May indicate:

• The remote server is unreachable.
• A firewall or provider is blocking the route.
• The hostname resolves incorrectly.
• The external IRC server is not responding.

Too many connections

This is normally a limit enforced by the external IRC network.

Record:

• The exact error.
• The affected network.
• The selected server.
• The approximate time.

Then create a Connection Help thread.

Nickname is already in use

The BNC connection may be working normally, but the external network has rejected the preferred nickname.

Configure an alternative nickname or identify with the network's nickname service where appropriate.
